Microtonal composer Ezra Sims's new piece “Landscapes” will receive its world premiere in a concert by the Boston Musica Viva this Friday, Nov. 14 at 8:00 pm at the Tsai Performance Center (685 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA).The concert “Credo in US: An American Kaleidoscope” features world premieres by Peter Child and Ezra Sims, both inspired by German poetry.
In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Boston Musica Viva performs works by composers who have long been associated with the ensemble, including world premieres by MIT Professor of Composition Peter Child and Ezra Sims. Peter Child’s Rilke Songs presents four poems by Rainer Maria Rilke set for the radiant soprano Elizabeth Keusch. In composing Landscapes, Ezra Sims took inspiration from the poetry of Georg Trakl and Friedrich Nietzsche.
Taking a fond look at its past, BMV performs John Huggler’s Capriccio sregolato – a “capriccio with a mind of its own” – which was written for and premiered by the ensemble in 1985. Likewise, Donald Harris’s Ludus II was premiered by BMV in 1973.
BMV has long been a champion of the music of John Cage. Written during World War II, Credo in US is a commentary on the U.S. and the “us” of that time. Cage’s wicked sense of humor and brilliant musicality are displayed through “chance music” and the playing of found objects (tin cans, electric buzzers).
